Working with Sexual Abuse Survivors

Introduction

Since Finkelhor (1994) reported on an international epidemiology study of child sexual abuse that 7% to 36% for women and 3% to 29% for men have been abuse.  Most studies found females to be abused 1 1/2 to 3 times the rate of men. The rate of sexual abuse has been plaguing the humanity.  There is also high percentage of these victim ends up with multi-mental health problem, estimating about 8 % of the mental health patients visiting psychiatric facilities in United States were sexual abuse survivors.  These 2 days program aims to provide a theoretical platform for therapists to organize their intervention strategies. In addition, therapeutic techniques and family system approach will also be introduced.  The focus of this program is working with the victims. 

Content

1.          Intra-familial vs. extra-family sexual abuse

2.          Incest and PTSD: Myths and facts

3.          The Clinical Assessment:

·         The differentiating the types of Incest families

·         Shame and its implication

·         Incest and Sexuality

4.          Common belief modals vs. the Multiple systems Modals

5.          The Incest Family Dynamics: the traumatic bonding cycles

6.          Treatment issues: Individual vs. Multiple modals, Family treatments, Working with Victims, Healthy boundaries, Non offending parents: parenting in the dark, and Offending parent

7.          Intervention techniques: scrapbook, narratives, rational vs. irrational thoughts, managing flashbacks, boundaries, anchoring, hypnotherapeutic techniques.

Dr Chan received a Master degree in Education and Counseling, and Doctoral degrees in counseling psychology and clinical psychology. He is an experienced therapist of family, marriage, sex, mental health, domestic violence, group and rehabilitation, a counselor for children with behavioral problems, and a registered social worker. Besides, he is an AAMFT (marriage and family) Approved Supervisor, EAP Consultant and Career and Employment Counselor. He has wide teaching, practitioner and curriculum development experience in Canada and Hong Kong. He is also an experienced therapist for 26 years including Critical Incident Debriefing: sudden death, suicide, car accidents, industrial accidents, natural disasters, crisis in hospitals; attained Certificate of Critical Incident Debriefing (Basic and Advance), Nova and Mitchell models; awarded Approved supervisor of America Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (Ontario, USA).
