Fundamental Financial Management and Accounting Practices (FULL)

Introduction

Many supportive staff in service units or head office sometimes work without thoroughly understanding the logics and principles of funding requirements or cultural practice of the NGO sector. Therefore, work effectiveness cannot be optimized and at the same time their job satisfaction is compromised. In order to equip accounting and clerical staff with enough knowledge to handle everyday tasks and even assume higher level of responsibilities including working closely with the senior management, this two-day course is launched to address this common issue of the sector.

Objective

  • To equip participants with necessary knowledge and skills in handling their routine fundamental financial management and accounting roles in service units or the head office of an agency.                                                                         
  • To enhance their confidence in work and gain a bigger picture of accounting practices so as to work better with non-accounting colleagues.
  • Content

  • Basic Financial Accounting Framework: an introduction to the conceptual and regulatory framework of financial reporting in Hong Kong, overview of different funding requirements and compliance in statutory reporting.
  • Routine Financial Accounting Practices for NGOs: accounting ledger, petty cash, revenue collection and receipt, accounting requirements and records, accounting adjustments, month end and year end closing.
  • Elements of Financial Statements for NGOs: including major items of receipts and payment, program income and expenses, donations and fund accounts handling and records.
  • Basic Internal Control Practices: management of fixed assets and records, safe custody of bank accounts, cash and checks, and procurement procedures.

    Mr. LAM Steve 林志輝先生

    Financial Management Consultant
    Mr. Steve Lam was previously the Deputy Director (Finance & General Administration) of a local NGO. With his experiences in the financial profession of over 30 years and in the social service organisations, he can provide insights to NGO staff in topics relating to financial management. Prior to joining NGO sector, he had rich experiences in financial and management accounting, financial management and taxation in the commercial sector. Steve is also an experienced trainer in many similar training courses for social work professionals and is a popular speaker in many NGO seminars with topics in relation to financial management. He is now an Honorary Lecturer in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration of the Hong Kong University and currently holds the qualifications of Certified Public Accountant, Chartered Management Accountant and Certified Practising Accountant (Australia).
