Session 2:Advanced Accounting Knowledge for NGO Accounting Staff

Introduction

More NGOs specifically stress on financial management and control to maintain the robustness of management system and steadiness of financial growth. In light of fulfilling the requirements of funding providers and the general public, NGOs meet different challenges in handling the daily financial issues. The are many non-accounting professionals who are overseeing the accounting and financial issues within their scope of responsibilities. HKCSS co-organized with professional accounting association this series of accounting courses for NGOs to enable their accounting staff the up-to-date financial knowledge and contemporary approaches in managing NGO finance.

Objective

This training course is designed for NGO staff with an aim to provide basic and essential knowledge for handling daily accounting issues with the following objectives:
1. to provide essential knowledge for center supervisors/service managers in handling the accounting records
2. to provide knowledge for the accounting staff to handle a full book of accounts effectively with due diligence.
3.To give insights fro management staff in decision making in financial issues.

Content

1. Accounting principles and accounting cycle concept
2. Understanding the classifications and relationship of items in the Balance Sheet and Income & Expenditure Statement
3. Distinction between Revenue and Capital income and expenditure
4. Understanding government grants and their relationship with fixed assets accounting treatment
5. Reconciliation between cash and accrual accounting for reporting purpose
6. Accounting adjustments for AFR and audited financial statements

Financial Management Consultant
Mr. Steve Lam was previously the Deputy Director (Finance & General Administration) of a local NGO. With his experiences in the financial profession of over 30 years and in the social service organisations, he can provide insights to NGO staff in topics relating to financial management. Prior to joining NGO sector, he had rich experiences in financial and management accounting, financial management and taxation in the commercial sector. Steve is also an experienced trainer in many similar training courses for social work professionals and is a popular speaker in many NGO seminars with topics in relation to financial management. He is now an Honorary Lecturer in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration of the Hong Kong University and currently holds the qualifications of Certified Public Accountant, Chartered Management Accountant and Certified Practising Accountant (Australia).

Ms Chan is a Certified Practicing Accountant who has extensive accounting and financial management experiences in the public sector. Ms Chan is currently the Public Sector Committee Chairlady of CPA Australia – Greater China and working as the Head of Finance and Human Resources of Hong Chi Association.
Ms. Wong , Alice 黃雅麗女士
FCPA, MCom, BCom
Ms Alice Wong has extensive financial management experience at senior level with large organizations. She has delivered presentations as a guest speaker for different organizations. Alice was a part-time university lecturer for several years. She holds a Master of Commerce degree and is a fellow member of HKICPA, a member of CPA Australia and its Public Sector Committee (Chairperson of the Committee from 2009 to 2010).
