【Zoom】Getting Started with Proposal Writing
Introduction
Proposal writing is a core part of securing resources and advancing services in the social service sector. For staff approaching it for the first time, becoming familiar with the local funding landscape, common concepts, and proposal writing requirements can take some time.
This workshop is designed specifically for practitioners who are new to proposal writing. It starts from the basics, helping participants understand the common types of funding available in Hong Kong, become familiar with key concepts often used in proposal writing, and learn the basic structure and key elements of a proposal. The goal is to give participants a clear initial picture of the whole application process, and a more structured way to approach their first proposal.
The workshop combines concept explanation with worked examples, breaking down jargon in plain language so participants leave with practical methods they can apply directly to their first proposal writing attempt.
Objective
● Identify common types of funding available in Hong Kong, including government funding, foundation grants, and corporate sponsorship
● Understand key concepts commonly used in proposal writing
● Understand the basic structure of a proposal and what each section needs to cover, with a clear initial blueprint for the whole document
Content
● Overview of common funding types in Hong Kong: government funding schemes, charitable foundations, and corporate social responsibility sponsorship, comparing their features and application requirements, giving those who have never applied before a sense of the bigger picture
● Introduce with plain-language examples, key concepts commonly used in proposal writing and assessment, such as how Theory of Change communicates an organisation's logic of intervention, and frameworks like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)
● Understand the basic structure of a proposal, learn what each section should cover, how to clearly articulate service needs and persuasively connect objectives, activities, and expected outcomes, and how different funding types shape how a proposal should be written
