Basic Financial Management for Non-financial Professionals of NGOs

Objective

Good accounting practice can support steady growth of an organisation and serves as a sign of good management behind. A series of workshops are organised with objectives to enable NGO staff who are responsible for accounting / financial issues to strengthen their knowledge in managing NGO finance.

Content

To provide participants with an overview of the financial accounting principles and applications, and to demonstrate an overall picture on how to read and obtain valuable data from an NGO’s financial report. Meanwhile, participants are able to grasp basic corporate financial principles and methodologies, and managerial accounting topics for their daily operations.
- Regulatory framework of financial reporting and basic financial accounting principles and applications
- Structure of financial statements: income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement
- Financial analysis: interpretation and analyzing financial statements
- Fundamental corporate finance principles and applications
- Budgetary planning and control: master, operation, capital and cash budgeting
- Break-even analysis
- Divisional performance evaluation through budgeting and key performance

Financial Management Consultant
Mr. Steve Lam was previously the Deputy Director (Finance & General Administration) of a local NGO. With his experiences in the financial profession of over 30 years and in the social service organisations, he can provide insights to NGO staff in topics relating to financial management. Prior to joining NGO sector, he had rich experiences in financial and management accounting, financial management and taxation in the commercial sector. Steve is also an experienced trainer in many similar training courses for social work professionals and is a popular speaker in many NGO seminars with topics in relation to financial management. He is now an Honorary Lecturer in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration of the Hong Kong University and currently holds the qualifications of Certified Public Accountant, Chartered Management Accountant and Certified Practising Accountant (Australia).
