Managing Enterprise Risk through Internal Control

Objective

Good accounting practice can support steady growth of an organisation and serves as a sign of good management behind. A series of workshops are organised with objectives to enable NGO staff who are responsible for accounting / financial issues to strengthen their knowledge in managing NGO finance.

Content

To provide the practical skills and knowledge for participants who want to master the importance of internal control and enterprise risk management excellence and to develop and implement such policies and procedures in their organisations. It will focus on relevant topics and the environment in NGO and use SWD’s Lump Sum Grant Manual for illustration.
-Driving forces in contributing an excellent corporate governance
- The value and function of Internal audit (IA) and internal control (IC) in NGO
- Setting up and managing an IA or IC function in NGO
- IC - general methodology and work approach
- The role of IA or IC in Enterprise Risk Management (ERM)
- ERM framework, methodology, and common language to be used
- Implementing ERM in practice

Financial Management Consultant
Mr. Steve Lam was previously the Deputy Director (Finance & General Administration) of a local NGO. With his experiences in the financial profession of over 30 years and in the social service organisations, he can provide insights to NGO staff in topics relating to financial management. Prior to joining NGO sector, he had rich experiences in financial and management accounting, financial management and taxation in the commercial sector. Steve is also an experienced trainer in many similar training courses for social work professionals and is a popular speaker in many NGO seminars with topics in relation to financial management. He is now an Honorary Lecturer in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration of the Hong Kong University and currently holds the qualifications of Certified Public Accountant, Chartered Management Accountant and Certified Practising Accountant (Australia).
