Performance Management for People Managers and Frontline Supervisors
Introduction
Performance management is an essential core management competency for supervisors and managers, serving as a backbone of a high-performing team. Yet in NGOs, many supervisory leaders find it challenging to conduct motivating performance reviews that strike a healthy balance between compassionate individualised care and management accountability. Common struggles include giving honest feedback without harming team morale, addressing persistent underperformance in a constructive way, and aligning day-to-day supervision with the organisation’s mission and governance expectation.
These tensions, between compassionate people management and management accountability, create systemic pressures that, when unresolved, lead to inconsistent appraisals, avoidance of difficult conversations, declining team effectiveness, and higher staff turnover, ultimately resulting in weaker service quality and mission fulfilment.
This workshop delivers a full set of practical performance management methodologies, covering objective alignment, continuous feedback, formal appraisal, developmental coaching and scenario-based underperformance handling. Through real-case scenarios, role-play drills and group discussions, participants will learn how to execute duties with empathy while aligning and supporting the organisation’s mission and long-term impact.
